Monthly Roundup October 2020

  1. Stephen Thompson

I just discovered your site. This is amazing. I happened to see your “5 Things” review of Vast: The Mysterious Manor, and thought I’m come check out your site. I’ve bookmarked it. I’ve already taken note of a few videos I want to watch later. I appreciated your comments about Xia: Legends of a Drift. I’ve been interested in that game for a long time, and you comment made me think about it again. I’ve been playing the new game Fort from Ledergames. Like you, I typically play 2-player games. My wife and I love to play them. Some of our favorites are Patchwork, Viticulture, Quacks of Quedlinburg, Cacao, and others. I played a simulated 2-player game of Fort with myself, just to learn it. I had so much fun with it that I’ve played it 3 other times. After re-reading the rules, I realized there were a few things I was doing wrong. Not sure whether your familiar with the game or not, so I won’t bother mentioning the issues. It’s a pretty straightforward game to play, but there’s a lot of variability that comes up. One of the coolest parts of the game is the way you can “follow” other players and get a mini-action during their turns. There are other games that do this (e.g. Glory to Rome), but Fort is a simpler and shorter game, and its nice to see some more mechanics usually reserved for longer games in a short game. Fort is very satisfying and I’d highly recommend it.

Hi Stephen! And welcome, it’s lovely to have you here. Xia: Legends of a Drift is such a fun game, it’s well worth looking into if you think you might be interested. Fort is one a friend a friend of mine has so I got to try it (in between lockdowns of course.) Do you enjoy it? It kind of ran lukewarm for me but I can see why people love it so much. I think I’m just spoiled when it comes to card games! But there is nothing better than getting sucked into a game right? And you’re right that follow action is cool, it reminds me of San Juan or Race for the Galaxy. I think we’re both lucky to have another person to play with as a bare minimum, so we can keep gaming despite world events. And you have some great taste in games! Wishing you another month of awesome gaming and it won’t be long before I’ve another Monthly Roundup video… where is the time going? Take Care! – Antoinette
